Molecular Virology Workshop
This activity is intended for clinical staff.
Statement of Need
This one-day interactive workshop focuses on practical aspects of molecular diagnostics and on exciting new technologies, with this year’s sessions encompassing pre-analytic considerations of molecular virology, together with advanced sequencing technologies and their potential applications to diagnostic clinical virology.
Educational Activity Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the participants should be able to:
- Select appropriate sample types for molecular testing and understand the impact of specimen selection on results of molecular diagnostic assays;
- Select and validate appropriate collection and transport devices and media for molecular diagnostic testing;
- Understand principles of nucleic acid extraction as applied to molecular diagnosis of viral infections;
- Select and validate nucleic extraction systems appropriate to molecular viral diagnostics; and
- Understand principles and applications of advanced sequencing technologies to clinical viral diagnostics.
The France Foundation and ASM adhere to ACCME Essential Areas, Standards, and Policies regarding industry support of continuing medical education. Disclosure of the planning committee, content reviewers, and faculty’s commercial relationships will be made known at the activity. Speakers are required to openly disclose any limitations of data and/or any discussion of any off-label, experimental, or investigational uses of drugs or devices in their presentations.
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of The France Foundation, American Society for Microbiology, and Pan American Society for Clinical Virology. The France Foundation is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
This meeting is being held in cooperation with USF Health.
The France Foundation designates this live activity for a maximum of 6 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) ™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
The American Society for Microbiology is an approved provider of continuing education programs in the clinical laboratory sciences through the ASCLS P.A.C.E.® program.
Florida Board Of Clinical Laboratory Personnel
The Molecular Virology Workshop has been approved for up to 6 hrs CE Credit for Clinical Laboratory Directors, Supervisors, Technologists, and Technicians.
California Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS)
ASM is accredited by the California Department of Health Services to offer continuing education for California Clinical Laboratory Scientists. All sessions designated for CE credit will also qualify for California CE credit toward CLS license renewal.
Resolution of Conflicts of Interest
In accordance with the ACCME Standards for Commercial Support of CME, The France Foundation will implement mechanisms, prior to the planning and implementation of this CME activity, to identify and resolve conflicts of interest for all individuals in a position to control content of this CME activity.

The following information can be found in invited participant letters of invitation. Please note that the following information does not apply to every invited participant. Please review your letter of invitation for specific information pertinent to your role.

All presentations must be in PowerPoint format. All speakers’ PowerPoint presentations are included in the Final Program. Your presentation should be approximately 45 minutes followed by 15 minutes of audience discussion and questions. Please refer to the online program to determine the order in which you will present.
Submitted presentations will be provided to the AV technicians prior to the workshop and pre-loaded in your workshop room prior to your presentation. Please bring a copy of your presentation on a thumb drive as back up or in the event you have made changes to your presentation since originally submitted.

ASM’s CME accreditor, The France Foundation (TFF), requires that all speakers complete a Faculty Disclosure statement. This statement is necessary for your presentation to be eligible to receive CE credit. As an ACCME accredited provider, TFF must ensure balance, independence, objectivity and scientific rigor in all its directly or jointly sponsored educational activities. Therefore, any person who is in a position to influence or control the content of a CME activity must disclose any financial interest or other relationship with a commercial interest producing healthcare goods or services that has a direct bearing on the subject matter of the CME activity. A relevant financial interest or other relationship may include such things as grants or research support, employee, consultant, major stockholder, member of speaker’s bureau, etc. that has occurred for any dollar amount over the past 12 months. The intent of disclosure is not to prevent a speaker with a relevant financial or other relationship from making a presentation, but rather to resolve any conflicts prior to the CME activity so the learner may participate in a balanced, unbiased CME event. It is the responsibility of the TFF, in collaboration with the course director, planning committee and CME advisory committee to review the disclosure statements and assure that CME activities sponsored by TFF are free of commercial bias and that clinical recommendations are based on evidence that is accepted within the profession of medicine as adequate justification for the care of patients.
Presentation Compliance with ACCME Standards
The ACCME Standards for Commercial Support also requires that your presentation be free of commercial bias and that any information regarding commercial products/services be based on scientific methods generally accepted by the medical community. When discussing therapeutic options, it is our preference that you use only generic names. If it is necessary to use a trade name, then those of several products must be used. Furthermore, if your presentation includes discussion of any unlabeled/investigational use of a commercial product, you are required to disclose this to the participants.
